US City Net Connecting Local Businesses To 160 ISPS Over MRV Optical Communication Gear

CHATSWORTH, CA - June 07, 2010 - MRV COMMUNICATIONS, INC., today announced that the City of Santa Monica, located in Southern California, has implemented a complete range of MRV optical transport, network demarcation and network management products to enable affordable broadband options for its business community as part of its innovative Santa Monica City Net. MRV Communications, Inc. is a leading supplier of optical communication systems for high-speed carrier and enterprise networks.

Santa Monica City Net is a 10 Gigabits per second (Gbps) broadband initiative by the city to support an environment for local businesses to compete in the global economy with cutting edge network solutions. As a secure, fast, and cost-effective fiber optic network, Santa Monica City Net provides the opportunity to integrate data, voice and video, and efficiently manage data exchanges with business partners. The City provides access direct to local businesses through Internet Service Providers (ISPs) that service Santa Monica.

The city initially began working with MRV in 2005 to build a network for city departments using its own fiber infrastructure. With savings achieved through that network upgrade, Jory Wolf, chief information officer for the City of Santa Monica and his team worked with MRV to build and install the fiber optic network. Santa Monica City Net is based on MRV’s LambdaDriverTM wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) optical transport system, OptiSwitch(r) 9124 (OS9124) packet optical aggregation units and OptiSwitch 912 (OS912) multi-port demarcation platform, all managed and provisioned by the company’s Pro-Vision software.

MRV LambdaDriver units were installed to connect Santa Monica businesses with Los Angeles’ premiere data center with more than 160 ISPs and one of the major hub sites in Santa Monica. OS912 units were also installed at multi-tenant buildings throughout Santa Monica and OS9124 units were installed to aggregate data from those buildings.

“The City of Santa Monica needed a solution that could provide the flexibility to quickly and simply connect its business community with local ISPs,” said Noam Lotan, chief executive officer of MRV Communications. “By implementing the LambdaDriver and OptiSwitch platforms, the City of Santa Monica was able to cost-effectively connect local businesses to over 160 ISPs that were able to offer affordable broadband solutions to an expanded market.”

“With each new project, our priority is to provide the community with innovative solutions that promote business activity and economic growth,” said Wolf. “MRV worked with us to design a network that would best serve our community and we look forward to collaborating with them again on future projects.”

About MRV’s LambdaDriver Platforms

MRV’s LambdaDriver is its premiere optical transport system for building high-performance enterprise access, metropolitan carrier and long haul transport networks. The LambdaDriver is a multi-functional, compact, modular WDM system that supports both dense wavelength division multiplexing and coarse wavelength division multiplexing technology. LambdaDriver also serves as a packet optical transport system by integrating Carrier Ethernet connection-oriented services and reconfigurable OADM for automated optical mesh topologies with wavelength-level switching. The LambdaDriver series can support data rates from 8 Mbps up to 40 Gbps with seamless future upgrades to 100 Gbps.

About MRV’s OptiSwitch Platforms

MRV’s OptiSwitch family is an award-winning line of compact carrier Ethernet switching platforms that range from the OptiSwitch 9000 metro Ethernet aggregation products to the OS900 demarcation series. OptiSwitch products offer service providers a full suite of carrier-grade Ethernet services along with high-availability, enhanced quality of service, security, TDM circuit emulation and Ethernet operation, administration and maintenance (OAM) support. This full suite of OAM tools creates flexible service awareness and rigid SLAs. OptiSwitch products meet IEEE, ITU, IETF standards and MEF specifications, offering complete control to simplify deployment and management while maintaining full interoperability and visibility into customer and provider networks.
